Welcome to the Experiment
Love on the Line · Season One · Episode One. Running time 60 minutes. Experiments in this episode: The Truth Dinner and Switch Partners.
Arrivals
EXT. PRIVATE ESTATE — DRIVEWAY — LATE AFTERNOON
Gold light across dry hills. A black SUV climbs a long gravel drive. Inside, TIFFANY (34) checks her lipstick twice. MARCUS (36) watches the window and says nothing. Neither has spoken since the airport.
You could act like you're excited.
I'm here.
A beat that lands harder than the line. Cut to four more arrivals, quick and rhythmic: DEVON & AISHA arguing about a credit card before the doors even open. REGGIE & JOLENE, eight years unengaged, laughing too loudly. CAMILLE & NOEL, holding hands like a habit neither can remember starting. BRYCE & SIMONE, on the phone with his mother.
INT. CONFESSIONAL BOOTH — CONTINUOUS (INTERCUT)
People keep calling this a retreat. I need a retreat. I need somebody to hand me a robe.
Honestly? I came because if I said no, that's an answer.
Hard cut to black. Title card: LOVE ON THE LINE.
The Line
EXT. ESTATE — LAWN — GOLDEN HOUR
Ten people, five couples, no luggage in sight. THE HOST enters — warm, unhurried, unbothered by the tension.
I want to be honest with you before anybody unpacks. This isn't a retreat. There's no spa. For the next several weeks, your relationship is the experiment.
Simone laughs. Nobody joins her. Reggie's smile drops by degrees.
And there's one rule you should hear right now, out loud, while you're standing next to each other. Nobody is required to leave with the person they came with.
This isn't about dating someone new or earning a proposal. It's about finding out whether the relationship you think you're in is the one your partner is actually living.
Silence. Camille lets go of Noel's hand. She doesn't seem to notice she did it. The camera does.
INT. THE LINE ROOM — MOMENTS LATER
One at a time, each person enters a narrow room lit by a single illuminated line in the floor. A tablet. Two questions: TODAY, ARE YOU IN, OUT, OR UNSURE? WHERE DO YOU THINK YOUR PARTNER STANDS — IN, OUT, OR UNSURE?
This is the Blind Line. Your truth and your prediction. The audience will see both. Your partner won't see either until the finale, after your final choices are locked.
Rapid-fire: Tiffany taps IN without hesitating. Marcus stares at the screen for eleven seconds and taps UNSURE. Devon: IN. Aisha: UNSURE. Reggie: IN. Jolene: UNSURE. Camille: UNSURE. Noel: IN. Bryce: IN. Simone: IN.
Second screen: Tiffany predicts Marcus is IN. Marcus predicts Tiffany is IN. Split-screen graphic: TIFFANY'S PREDICTION — IN / MARCUS'S TRUTH — UNSURE. Two parallel illuminated tracks separate. The first gap is visible to viewers, not to the couple.
Graphic: the Love Line lights up for the first time. Audience knows. Partners don't.
The Truth Dinner
INT. DINING ROOM — NIGHT
A long table. Candles. Ten place settings and, at each one, a sealed black envelope. Earlier that afternoon each person submitted three questions they've been afraid to ask. Nobody knows which ones will be served.
Every question at this table came from someone sitting at it. You don't have to answer. But you do have to be here while it's asked.
Devon opens the first envelope. Reads it. Looks at Aisha. Reads it again.
"How much money do you actually owe, and who else knows before me?"
Aisha's fork stops halfway. Across the table, Jolene mouths oh no to nobody.
Forty-one thousand. My sister knows.
Your sister.
She's the one who told me to tell you.
Camille reaches for wine. Bryce laughs once, too loud, the way men laugh when it isn't their turn yet. It becomes his turn.
"When your mother speaks about me, do you defend me, or do you wait for it to be over?"
…That's not a fair question.
It's the only one I had.
INT. DINING ROOM — LATER
The last envelope is Tiffany's. She looks at Marcus before she opens it.
"Do you still want this, or are you just being kind to me?"
Marcus opens his mouth. Closes it. The candle between them does most of the acting. Nine people wait. He answers the second half.
I've never been unkind to you.
Tiffany nods, smiles, and it costs her everything. Under the table, her hand shakes.
Confessional: Jolene — "He answered a whole different question and she let him."
Switch Partners
EXT. ESTATE — MORNING
Ten names in a bowl. The Host draws pairs. Not romantic — an assignment. A two-hour task with someone else's partner: build something, cook something, walk somewhere and talk.
Sometimes a stranger can say the thing your partner has been trying to say for years.
These are perspective partners, not dates. Nobody is shopping for a replacement.
Pairs: Marcus & Simone. Tiffany & Noel. Devon & Jolene. Aisha & Reggie. Camille & Bryce.
EXT. OLIVE GROVE — DAY (MARCUS & SIMONE)
Can I say something you're not going to like?
Everybody's been saying those.
You keep saying you don't want to hurt her. That's not the same as wanting her.
Marcus keeps walking. Then he stops walking. That's the shot.
INT. KITCHEN — DAY (TIFFANY & NOEL)
Tiffany laughs — a real one, the first this episode. Noel is easy, attentive, asks a follow up question and then another. She notices herself noticing.
He asked me what I've been reading. That's it. That's the whole thing. And I got emotional in a kitchen with a man I met yesterday.
EXT. TRAIL — DAY (AISHA & REGGIE)
Eight years. She thinks I'm scared.
Are you?
I'm scared of doing it wrong. Same thing to her.
INT. POOL HOUSE — DAY (CAMILLE & BRYCE)
Bryce, defensive all episode, asks Camille one question and gets a truth she hasn't told Noel.
We haven't touched each other in fourteen months. And he thinks we're fine.
Producers note: Camille's admission is the season's first Receipt. It goes in the vault.
What It Cost
INT. THERAPY SUITE — LATE AFTERNOON
THE THERAPIST — observing all day, speaking for the first time — takes Devon and Aisha for fifteen minutes. No verdict. One pattern.
You didn't hide the debt from him. You hid it from the version of him you expected to react. Which one showed up last night?
Devon, quietly: "The wrong one." Aisha looks up.
INT. WOMEN'S ROOM — NIGHT
No partners. No therapist. Wine and honesty.
Fourteen months.
Girl.
And you were about to buy him a boat?
Laughter, then the room turns. Tiffany hasn't said anything.
Tiff. You good?
He didn't answer the question.
INT. MEN'S ROOM — SAME
My mother is not the problem.
Bro.
She thinks you cheated once.
Silence. Marcus doesn't look up.
It wasn't once.
Cut to commercial.
Where You Stand Tonight
INT. THE LINE ROOM — NIGHT
Second check-in. Same question, one day later. Tiffany: IN. Marcus: hovers over IN, taps UNSURE again — and this time the camera holds on his hand. Camille moves from UNSURE to OUT. Noel, unaware, taps IN and adds, unprompted, "Tell her I said she's still it."
Each also records a new prediction. Noel predicts Camille is IN. Graphic: NOEL'S PREDICTION — IN / CAMILLE'S TRUTH — OUT. The parallel tracks pull apart across the screen. His optimism plays against a truth only the audience knows.
EXT. ESTATE — TERRACE — NIGHT
The Host addresses the group. Behind her, a thin illuminated line runs the length of the terrace.
Everything you said today is on the record. Some of it your partner heard. Some of it they didn't. Not yet. The Receipts Room can reveal what happened. But your Blind Line truth and predictions stay sealed until the finale.
Push in on Tiffany, hopeful. Push in on Marcus, already somewhere else. The line between them glows.
Next week on Love on the Line: the Receipts Room opens.
